still more 金曜日の英語

Well... it's Friday again. Nothing much to say, really.

I finally went back to that udon place in nishi-shinjuku (sinjyuku in nippon-shiki romaji - note the "sin"). What was the name? Oh yeah, 東京麺通団.

It was OK, I guess. My Japanese friends weren't able to tell me why the egg udon was supposed to be "sexy". I guess it will remain a mystery.

The orange-haired, plucked eyebrow guy behind the counter was kind of rude to me. Never ceases to amaze me when Japanese people say rude shit to me, assuming I can't understand Japanese and don't know what they're saying. Especially, when it's a guy with orange hair and plucked eyebrows and when I'm minding my own business.

そんな時は日本語でも英語でも怒らなくてはダメ!!
ガマンする意味ないし、それに、
彼らの成長の為にも怒ってあげないと。
これからは、ちゃんと本人の前で怒ってね。

If I were Japanese, they would listen to my complaint. But since I'm just a "foreigner", they'll either just laugh, or pretend to listen and then laugh after I've left and say something like "strange, arrogant foreigners".

They learn from Ishihara...

Plus, it's better for my "Buddhist meditation" not to get angry. ;-)

Ok, you were great that you didn't get angry....but You had to "teach" them what is wrong and what is right thing.
otherwise they have no chance to learn.
you had a chance to change them.
Don't give up before you try.
And please believe that people are not that very very stupid. They can learn. believe it. and you can feel more comfortable. i guess!! ;)

Are you still thinking why they call the egg udon as "sexy"?
I guess it is just a metaphor. They have the same feeling to the udon as you feel when you drink your favorite beers like Oval. They think the egg udon is god damned gooood! "Damned good" would be meant to be "たまらん" in Japanese. We say "たまらん" in many occasions. For instance, especially guys say "たまらん" when they meet hot chicks. In this case, hot means sexy so that "たまらん" egg udon would be sexy...
Does it make sense to ya?

Can you say "たまらん" to the girl's face? If I meet an amazing girl and say "たまらん" to her and open my eyes real wide, will she laugh? Or slap me?!?

I think I'll try it tomorrow! ;-)

Well, I think you misunderstood a little bit...
You could say "たまらん" when you meet a very sexy and beautiful girl. This means how you feel to the girl. In a sense, "たまらん" is similar to "wow" .

Didn't necessarily misunderstand, I was just asking if a woman would be happy or angry at hearing it. In other words, if it's rude or not.

For example, in English the slang word "schwing!" (from an old comedy show) is also something a guy says when he sees a beautiful woman. But it's not really polite to say in her presence. "Wow!" is probably OK to say in her presence.
