金曜日の英語
Good evening everybody!
Sometimes on Fridays I'll write in English. OK? First, I want to say "I'm sorry" about the bad quality of the photos here. I don't have a good digital camera...
:-( I'm poor lately.
I'm drinking Heartland beer now. Do you like it? I do. The green bottle is beautiful. How about the Heartland Cafe in Roppongi Hills? Have you been there? Do you like it? It gets very crowded in the evenings, doesn't it?
Do you want some English advice?
Here's one point: many of my Japanese friends make a (little) mistake when using "almost". I think they are translating "ほとんど", for example "ほとんど日本人の女性はかわいいです。" And my friends say, "Almost Japanese ladies are cute."
But remember, if you say "almost", you need another word after it. For example: "almost all", "almost any", "almost every".
So, it is "Almost all Japanese ladies are cute (adorable)." You can also use "most". Then you don't need another word. So, "Most Japanese ladies are cute (adorable)." is OK, too.
やっぱり、日本語のポストより英語のポストのほうが長い。。。(^-^)

こんにちは!
ミクシーで紹介されていたのでちょっとdrop byしました。
私は長く英語を教えていたので間違った英語を見ると頭がくらくらっとします。なのでAlmostの間違った使い方の部分は飛ばして読みました。私の主義として、正しいきれいな英語だけを読んだり聞いたりするのが一番の学習法だと思っています。ほら、アンティークの目利きになるにはいい物、本物だけを

Hello.
I've heard of your blog on mixi.
"Most" Japanese make a mistake when using "almost"...I agree with you.
My English teacher tought me it.
And the teacher also tought me, the word "almost" sometimes has negative meaning.
For example, "I almost died" :-)
I added the atom of your blog in my RSS reader.

Hi,
heard about this blog on mixi, thought to take a look.
That post about common mistake of using "almost".
I've heard my English teachers at the college I went to saying about this mistake hundreds on times.
Fortunately I learned it correctly though, it's sort of interesting, in a way, that how many people actually make this mistake.
Take care.
再度、日本語でこんにちは。
私の感覚なのですが、あまりネイティヴの御方は、"Allmost all ..."という言い方はされないような感じがします。
どちらかと言えば、危機を脱したときなどに使う、「I almost died. もう少しで、死ぬするところだった。(だが、死ななかった)」という、否定文に近い話をするときに、使うことが多いような感じがします。
では、また。(^^)/~~~
Thanks Prowler!
Yes, "I'm almost finished", etc.
