Friday's English - Winding Down...

I was riding the train this evening and looking at an advertisement from Nova. One thing struck me as strange -- the poster states that you can learn イタリア語、フランス語、ドイツ語、中国語、and 英会話. So you can learn Italian, French, German, Chinese... But you can't learn English. Instead, you can learn "English Conversation". I don't get it...

2 more days until the first anniversary of this weblog.

The big surprise is that on the anniversary, I'm planning to close down the weblog. Seems like a good time to me. For everybody who's been reading, thanks for your visits. ２年前、秋に岩手県に行きました。なぜ行った？あまり説明できない。その時はちょっと迷った。新幹線で盛岡まで行って、車を借りて、盛岡市よりちょっと東の方にある高原へ行きました。何を探していた、言えないけど、高い地方に行きたかった。3日間いろんな所にドライブしました。本当に寒かった！だけど、最後の日は西の方へ行って、このMagical所に着きました。

小麦ビールは良い物です。^_^

PS:この会社はすばらしいですが、なぜNative　English Speakerの会社員はいないそうかなァァ。。。（"Corprate Profile"じゃなくて"Corporate Profile"だよね)

そして、みそ汁の作り方を教えたかったが、Step①は「water in miso」って書いちゃった。

でも変なことだけじゃなかった。頭が良い生徒さんが先生に新しいことを教えました。「いちごババロリア」の作り方を説明して、私：「ババロリア？？」、彼女：「はい！」、私：「？？」。彼女が辞書で調べて、フランス語の「bavarois」から？？（＝”Bavarian Cream”？？）先生は生徒に成りました。m(_ _)m

このウェブログを読んでいる日本人は私の気持ちを分からないかもしれないですが、実は私は日本のマンガはあまり好きじゃない。描き方は気持ち悪い - 目は大きいすぎ等。日本とアメリカではマンガは人気あると、別に大丈夫ですね。みんな読んでいる（読むと言う？？）ね、子供から４０歳のサラリーマンまで。"to each his own..." or "to each HER own..." ;-)

でも最近yahoo.comではYahoo　Messengerのアドが多くて、日本のマンガみたいAvatarばかり。。。気持ち悪いです。 >;-p

Here's a request about comments: when I post in Japanese, I hope people write comments in Japanese. When I post in English, you can comment in English (if you don't feel comfortable with English, Japanese is always OK, but keep in mind that if it's fancy, complicated Japanese, I probably won't be able to understand it...)

The main thing I want to avoid is English comments about Japanese posts.

Saw in the online newspaper today that 25% of Japanese junior high and high school students suffer from sleep disorders. I've often wondered how Japanese people can fall asleep so easily on the trains. Maybe this is part of the reason.

On Tuesday I watched a junior high school boy falling asleep on the shoulder of a stranger (a middle-aged man) on the train. The man was irritated and he often jerked his shoulder up to get the boy off his shoulder. But the boy always leaned to his left again and ended up on the man's shoulder...

Maybe I would do the same. But if it's a cute girl, maybe I would let her sleep peacefully...

「Tainted Love」は有名な歌ですが。。。ビデオはそんなに面白くないと思うけど、Synthの音が好きです。最近日本の女性（洋!?）服の店で、「Tainted　Love」をサンプルした新しい歌も聞こえます。

私達はあまり日本語の発音ができないから、カラオケは「carry oaky」に成っちゃう。今日友達と一緒に行きました。実はカラオケはあまり好きじゃない（と思った）。一人でアパートにいる時歌うのはまあまあできるが、カラオケに行ったら下手です。。。:-( だけど、今日 "You Spin Me Round"（恥ずかしい）と"Bizarre Love Triangle"と"That's the way (I like it)"を見つけて、楽しめました！

今日の夕食はチーズステーキサンド。東武で買ったおいしいパリ風のバゲット、ギネスビールにマリネードした牛肉、ミモレットチーズ、たまねぎ。。。とオーストラリアのキャンワイン。^_-

また、全然日本と関係ないポストですね。もうしわけない。でも、そのパリ風バゲットは日本のデパートで作られたね。^_-　後、使った牛肉はやっぱりアメリカのではない。^_- (国内だって)

To answer Hiro's question in the comments: yes, I'm genki! Yesterday, I got my visa extension. So I can stay in Japan until 2009. :-o I'm already planning how to make use of the summer. Fishing near Chuzenji? A visit to the Oiden festival? A drive to the Japan Sea? (from hikejapan) Maybe all of the above.

Did I ever tell you how delicious Bass Pale Ale is (what I'm drinking now)? It may be underrated, but it's tasty and has a nice fruity, malty "nose".

Here's my favorite toy lately... I learned about it from some of my students. Iemon presents are awesome. When it's too muggy to open the window, I hang it from my air conditioner (but that's probably cheating).

PS: in searching for Iemon info, I noticed this "slim & beauty" campaign. Makes me chuckle -- because this is one of the really weird things for a native speaker: making a slogan that has an adjective and a noun together.

Youtubeはとても面白いと思う。特に好きなグループのビデオを探すのは楽しいです。DuranDuranはそんなに好きじゃなかったが、LeBonとRhodesのside project 「Arcadia」はけっこう好きでした。昨日このすばらしいビデオを見つけた。変なディズ二ーライドみたいですね。懐かしい。

It's Friday again... I skipped writing last week - maybe the first time all year. But I just wasn't in the right mood.

Lately, I'm grooving on books from amazon.co.jp. Since for some reason they won't accept my credit card, I walk down the street to 7-eleven and pay there (and try to resist buying booze, too). Japanese convenience stores are really cool!

Another thing I'm grooving on is Brian Kage's "Detroit Sessions" podcasts. The first one and the latest one are quite nice IMHO.

じゃ、日記じゃなくて”Memoirs"。。。先週お母さんから、「Memoirs of a Geisha」もらいました。いっぱい人がぼやいたが、（珍しくてJapanese-Americans）僕はけっこうきれいな映画と思います。８年前、元彼女に「Maiko are apprentice Geisha」と言った時、元彼女の（バカな）同僚（男の人）が「違う！あなたは日本人です。なんでアメリカ人に日本の文化を教えてもらう？」

でもたまに日本人より、外国人の方が日本の文化を分かりますね。

昨日品川入国office。。。３年前行った時、かわいくて優しい入国の女性と話したが、昨日のは。。。忙しい感じ。。。今夜良い天気ですから、もう一回Buchiへ食べ/飲みに行きました。ルッコラサラダと日本酒とスモークたまごとビールでした。電車のホームで生徒さんを見て、話しました。授業の時よりぜんぜん違う感じ。

昨日Buchiに行きました。ワンカップ酒を飲みたかったから、山形の上喜元を注文しました。店員さんはとても優しかった。ワンカップを注文するとミックスナッツをサービスでもらいます。molasses walnutsが特においしかった。Buchiのメニューはいっぱいおいしい物があると思う：たとえば、Rocketサラダ、スモーク湯でたまご、いろいろ。。。今度ぜったいまた行くと思います。

Friday's English "Rainy Season"

Well, it's 5:18am... Woke up at 4, tried to go back to sleep but couldn't because I was listening to the girl upstairs stomp around. She looks about 50kg, but sounds about 100kg.

Lots of good news lately! It's rainy every day, so the rainy season is here. To the Japanese readers, yes, I know the "official rainy season" doesn't start until the "Japan Ministry of Rainy Seasons" says it starts, but hey, it's rainy every day, so as far as I'm concerned it's the "rainy season".

OK, I'll try not to be in a bad mood... I'll tell you a funny story. At one of the places I teach, there are young students. From the beginning of the classes I've told them that I can't speak Japanese. But from time to time I accidentally let slip something in Japanese and whenever I do they freak out and start screaming "HE SPEAKS JAPANESE! HE JUST SPOKE JAPANESE!" but I deny it and make that Japanese gesture, waving my hand back and forth (almost looks like waving goodbye), saying "no, I can't speak Japanese".

OK, not such a funny story...

I should be happy because all the rain is bringing plenty of mushrooms, but I haven't been mushroom hunting lately. Ah, what to do this weekend??? Maybe a nice bottle of kudoki jouzu (くどき上手) will inspire me and lift my spirits... Maybe if I drink it, I'll meet a girl like this. ^_^

よもぎ

じゃ、ちょっと違う。ヨモギじゃなくて、アブサンの話ですが。。。ヨモギは英語で「mugwort」で、アブサン（ハーブ）は「wormwood」です。学名は：ヨモギ=Artemisia vulgaris, アブサン=Artemisia absinthium。

最近、本当にアブサンのマニアです。信濃屋で３本があったが、なく成った。その３本の中で、ryecatcherが２本を。。。マニア。。。

９０年代アメリカでは、お父さんの畑でwormwoodを育ていた。良いハーブだよ！今週はこのアブサンを飲んでいます。^_^

昨日MSNMessengerでお母さんとビデオチャットして、「Happy Mother's Day」と言いました。そして、日本人の芸能人の中で、だれがハンサムについて話しました。僕は「"Shall We Dance"の男」と言った。どう思いますか？でも僕は男の人ですから、速くカワイイ女性に変わった。お母さんにこの人はカワイイと言いました(スマイルがカワイイですから^_-)。

また日本の物じゃないけど、ポンパニッケルについて書きたいと思います。昨日世田谷の信濃屋に行って、ポンパニッケルパンを買いました。８９年、ドイツに住んでいた時初めて食べて、とてもおいしかった。原材料は：ライ麦粉、水、シュガービートシロップ、塩、大麦モルツエキス、酵母。こんな物。焼いたら、チェダーチーズのトッピング付け、おいしいです！ :-d

信濃屋は会員カード作ってもらいましたが、バカな事です。。。高いアブサンを買った後作ってもらったから。。。 :-(

いやですけど、今朝起きた時、外へ見て、アパートの後ろにあるモミジを見て、風が強かった。きれいだから、なんとなく嬉しかったです。^_^

危ない夏のヨガ

先週Amazonで注文した本「The Dangerous Summer」と「Yoga for People Who Can't Be Bothered to Do It」は今日着いた。いつも来ているPelicanさんが持って来た（Pelicanはバイトで、本当の仕事はRockBandの人みたいから、面白い人です）。visaで払うのはできなくて、7-11で払いました。日本のコンビニは本当に便利だと思います。^_^

Hauntedはもう終わり。。。金曜日に「Cassandraのストーリーは仏教みたい」って書いたが、最後のChapterを読んだ時「あっ、ちょっと違う」と思った。でもやっぱりあっている - 仏教の「corpse meditation」だった。:-(

おりがみHipster PDA

前HipsterPDAについて書きましたね。最近この「おりがみHipsterPDA」と遊んでいます。A4紙１枚を使って、八角形を作る。Pegcilをクリップして、良いHipsterPDAをできます。^_-

紙はいくらだっけ？？１円？Pegcilは東急ハンズで１０円ぐらいで売っています。

I also imagine that after using all the pages (after filling up the front and back, you just fold inside out -- guess it gives you, what, 16 pages? Friday's English "Haunted"

Reading Chuck Palahniuk's Haunted *. It's a damned good book. Creepy. Not for the faint of heart. But the story about Cassandra and "The Nightmare Box" is dead-on what I've read about Buddhist enlightenment...

* He's the guy who wrote Fight Club.

Got Haunted at Tower Records. It's finally out in paperback. I was looking for a copy of Hemingway's The Dangerous Summer. But instead of getting a dark book about bullfighting I got a dark book about... people.

Friday's English (A little complaining)

Wow, Shinjuku and Shibuya are crowded on these holidays. In my Japanese language textbook, it said that such long holidays are the best time to wander around Tokyo, because everybody is off to someplace else (maybe the textbook was actually talking about Obon...). But it doesn't seem to be true.

At Mister Donut, an older lady tried to cut in line in front of me. This happens often here in Japan. Usually, I let it go. But today I was in a bad mood, so I said "chotto ii desu ka?" and ordered. What do Japanese readers here think about people breaking in line in front of you??

But anyway, I got my 3 cafe au lait okawaris at Mister Donut. And I talked to a girl from Aomori (visiting Tokyo) who was studying English next to me. She said she likes Disneyland. I guess most Japanese people do, right? But it's strange, I'm an American, and I don't have much interest in Disneyland...

On the Morel front, I found a small one by Sengawa yesterday. I think I scared the obaasan walking by me. I said, "konnichiwa". She nodded. Then I said, "kinoko wo mitsuketa" and pointed to it. She looked scared. Then she saw it and said, "hontou!" Yesterday, many Japanese people looked at me like I was a "kowaihito"　(note the racist big nose - you see this often in school textbooks). Maybe it was because I hadn't shaved (from www.e-famosos.com)! ^_-

Morel 旅行 Part 2

じゃ、優しい金髪ギャルの後、車を借りて、カーナビは道志村にセットして、ドライブを楽しんでいる。ドライブは本当にひさしぶり。アメリカではいつもできたが、日本は車を借りる時だけ。

ドライブの時いつも早くコンビニで止まる。コーラとパン（pastry)を買って、払う時おばさんの店員が間違って、「oh shoot!」（「oh shit!」か）と聞こえた。私が英語で「it sounded like you were speaking English there」と言って。おばさんが「I lived in Hawaii!」と言いました。少し会話できて、ゴールデンウィークやドライブについて話しました。それはこのMorel旅行の２番目ビックリして/嬉しかった所。すぐ東京を出て、friendlyな人に会うと思って、速く田舎へ引っ越したほうがいいと思った。^_-

道志川のとなりにドライブしながら、普段は込んでいて、今日はけっこう楽、他のドライブしている人とcrazyなバイク人達がいなくて、楽しんでいた。

ちょうど道志から都留市まで林道のトンネルを出て、ドライブの最初の　「pinkel pause」　をして（ドイツに住んでいた時、この面白い言葉ホストファザーに教えてもらた！）、土地に見て、白いアミガサタケ２本を見つけた。この週末はぜったいラッキーだと思った！

Morel 旅行 Part 1

土曜日、朝６時。昨日少し準備しましたが、まだ終わっていない。７時１１分の電車乗る前いろいろしなければ成らない。パッキング（風袋？？英語のpacking for a tripと言いたい）、シャワー、インタネットで天気チェックして。。。昨日Yahooジャパンでは雨だって。でも外に見たら、良い天気です。じゃ、雨の場合はしょうがない、先週車の予約したから。

今週末西の方へ行きたいです。去年行った、すばらしい所の八ヶ岳に行きたいです。

パッキングについて、いつも無印良品ノートに書いたリストを見る。たとえば。。。

食べる：
オートミール
ラーメン
水ボトル/フィルタ
...

もちろん、リストは英語で書いた。見出し（？）ヘディング（？）は"eating", "sleeping", "relaxing", "clothing", "walking", "various", "fishing", "travelling", "shrooming".

橋本駅に着いた時、駅からレンタカー屋さんまで歩きながら、この旅行の一回目のビックリ事があった。金髪ギャルがいて、一人を見て、彼女と僕は一緒にニコニコした。本当にビックリしました。普段はそんな金髪ギャルは私に興味がないと思って、LV鞄とか、他のわがままなことだけ興味あると思いました。でも違う。やっぱり、みんな違う。みんな自分の性格ですね。旅行はまだ初めてないけど、もう習う。

アミガサタケ・アップデート

今日仕事の近くにある公園(板橋区）で白い(黄色？）アミガサタケ１０－２０本を見つけました。でも先週採ったほうが良いと思いました。あまりfreshじゃない。でもビックリして、嬉しかった。

I was lucky and got the day off today. The only question is: to fish or not to fish?

Lately, the Katsuragawa has been disappointing. Just when the fishing gets good, the water turns muddy because of some boondoggle construction upstream near Tsuru-shi.

It's funny how the "Friday's English" posts are getting bigger and the Japanese posts are getting fewer and smaller...

I put off my morel hunting trip to Yamanashi until this weekend. But it looks like rain... Oh well, shikata ga nai. I've already made the car rental reservation and everything.

ビールが好き人はもう知っているかも。。。良い店は池袋のTOBUデパートですね。今夜仕事の後、イギリス人の友達と一緒に池袋のHubへ飲みに行きました。その後、TOBUに行って、ドイツのDunkler Doppelbockを買っちゃった。ベルギーのビールも好きですね。最近友達がLeffe　Radieuseを紹介して、Commentで批評したら、嬉しいです。^_^

狐の嫁入り

今日１５歳の生徒に教えました。ゲームしながら虹の英単語（"rainbow"）が出て、私は"somewhere over the rainbow"を少し歌って、そして「ね、ニジマスとかキツネの結婚式とか。。。」と言いました。キツネの結婚式？？黒澤の「夢」を見た事があるから、そんな変な事を言いました。^_-　もちろん生徒は「えっ？？？」と言いました。私、「日本の文化では、何かあるよね」と言って。「知らないの？ね、キツネの結婚式を見ちゃうダメ。見たら、ごめんなさいと言わなければ成らない。キツネはどこにあるか、虹の下へ行かなければ成らない事。。。」と言って。「違う？じゃ、nevermind!何もない！」

だから、先ちょっと調べたかった。こんな事か？

Yes, I had a swell train ride today. Not really, I'm being facetious... A "paper rustler" sat next to me. You know the type: and older Japanese guy who makes a lot of noise with his newspaper. But this guy today was great. First, he dropped down onto the seat (like children do), maybe trying to shake everybody else on the seat. Then he stands up and does it again -- drops down as violently as possible. Then he took out his newspaper and proceeded to beat, smack, fold, crease and otherwise punish his poor innocent newspaper, trying (I guess) to announce his presence to the other passengers by making as much noise as possible. Bad newspaper! (SMACK!) Bad newspaper! (RUSTLE...SMACK!) Tokyo is always exciting. ;-)

And Neco, on the Morel front, I saw several by Shinjuku Gyoen (not in the gardens, but around here, on the walkway just outside the gardens) today. They were a little old, not so fresh looking, but still interesting to find. (And to perplex people watching me, trying to figure out what the hell I was looking at.) ;-)

じゃ、キャンプ/トレッキングの小さい旅行から帰りました。一つの印象は。。。寒かった！寝袋は-5℃まで良いけど、もう寒かった。やっぱりキノコを採りたかったが、寒すぎから、無理みたいでした。残念。でも良いところもありました。一つは星と月がきれいでした。後は、面白い動物の声を聞こえました。最初は犬と思ったが、犬よりこの音は(hmmm... how do I say "regular", in the sense of "periodic" and "unaltering")でした。一時間聞いたから、1am,2amまで聞こえたから、「あっ！フクロウかも」と思いました。こんな音でした。(from www.peregrynne.com)

も一つの良いところは小さい沢からおいしい水を飲めて、フライフィッシングで大切な川虫を見れました。カワゲラとトビゲラ。

２１日のコメントで書いたが、昨日東京にある公園で２００６年の最初のMorelを見つけました。白いMorel（アミガサタケ）の前、この黒いMorel（トガリアミガサタケ）が出ます。イチョウの下とか、桜（？）の下ありそうです。日本では人気ないかもしれないですが、アメリカとフランスでは、すごく人気あります。アメリカではMorelは田舎の人が探しています。でもフランスではMorelの料理は「Haute Cuisine」みたいです。Morelはけっこう高いです。このサイトで１ポンド（453g)は $50ぐらい。

こんなレシピたとえば：

最近伊右衛門お茶のPETボトルを買う時、この良い物をもらいます。何となく好きです。初めて伊右衛門を飲んだ時は２年前、まだ東京で売っていない時（と思う）。それは、旅行で東京から日本海までレンタカーで行きました。Suntoryの白州蒸溜所でツアーして、運転していたから、ウイスキーを飲めなかった。。。だけど、”新しいお茶”をもらいました。他の（優しい、関西人）客さんの女性が知っていた、「あっ！このおいしいお茶だ」（ぐらい）と言っていました。

Today I had lunch at a Russian restaurant in Shibuya: Rogovsky. It was really good. I had many things, including salted mushrooms, Russian black beer and tea with jam. I wanted to try some rye vodka, but I thought it would be too much since I absolutely had to have a pint of Guinness to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! ;-) At the Shibuya Mark City Ginza Lion, they put a shamrock in the creamy foam of the beer.

In America, if people don't wear something green on St. Patrick's Day, we pinch them. Could be trouble on Japan's trains... ^_-

"Lush" means many things in English. One meaning (as a noun) is a person who drinks a lot! ;-)

But today I'm talking about the shop "Lush". I never went in there before, maybe because the sign says "handmade cosmetics" and I thought it was for women. But today I had extra time in Shibuya's Mark City and I saw all the interesting soaps, so I went in. The clerks who work there are really friendly, so I enjoyed talking to them. Maybe I'm in love with them. :-o

I also went into the one in Sangenjaya because I was early for my class. Maybe I'm in love with those clerks, too... :-o (They were also very friendly)

Sorry I'm not writing much these days. Well, I'm not writing much here, but I'm writing elsewhere... ;-) Let me know if you're angry and want me to write more here - and want me to write more in Japanese. :-o

I went to pick up my paycheck today. Then wandered into Shinjuku Gyoen. I always go back to the "French Formal Garden" and imagine that I'm in the Luxembourg Garden in Paris. (If I were in Paris, maybe I would imagine being in Shinjuku Gyoen!) I like the Sycamore trees there (plane trees). Especially now in winter with no leaves, they give me the feeling of Europe and winter and make me nostalgic (懐かしい).

I had seen them before, but today I saw the parrots(?) again(ワカケホンセイインコ). I was sitting on a bench in the French Garden area and heard them. Then they flew and perched on the sycamore tree near me. One of the parrots went into a hole in the tree. I think they have a nest there. It made me happy to see them and it reminded me of my ex-girlfriend who had a parakeet (インコ).

PS: apparently, Shinjuku Gyoen has a webcam!

Yes, HORROR! Well, I was just thinking of Koji Suzuki's novel "Ring". I've never seen the movies, but I found the book in English at the Setagaya library. I read the "dust jacket" and it was very interesting - he wrote the novel while being "Mr. Mom" with his daughters. Before that, he was a "cram school" teacher and told scary stories to his students and they enjoyed the stories. While his wife was working as a school teacher, he stayed at home to take care of their young daughters. With his daughter on his lap, he worked on "Ring".

That "story behind the story" is almost as cool as the horror story about "the ring" itself. If you haven't read the book, you should. I've heard it's quite different in a few ways from the movies. Quite different in very, very interesting ways...

PS: apparently, he likes Hemingway's stories, too.

８万円あれば、このライターを買って、このおいしい葉巻も買えるね。(<-CAO葉巻サイトの音楽が好きです。彼のピンストライプスーツ/黒いシャツもかっこいいと思う)。前、世田谷にある天野屋で売っていました。

Friday's English "Bad Habits"

This is the post I promised Kさん but I've been putting off...

I wrote before about my bad habit of snus. Anyway, finally on Tuesday I got my latest package from "The Northerner". I ordered Ettan, LD Original with bergamot (like Earl Grey Tea), Landströms Grov, and Göteborgs Rapé. The Göteborgs Rapé is especially nice (note that it's not the English word "rape", but the French word "Rapé"!), because it has oils from juniper berries in it.

About Göteborg: a couple of years ago I met a Japanese/Swedish girl at the Circle-K here in Setagaya. She was kind of cute. I asked her to say "Göteborg" and when she said it, with the Swedish pronunciation, it was really interesting and sexy. ^_-

Yes, Kさん asked me to write about snus. She said, "be sure to write that it gives you a buzz!" The online dictionary says this about "buzz":

1. A state of pleasant intoxication, as from alcohol.
2. A state of stimulation or overstimulation, as from caffeine.

Another friend, Tさん, always nags me to stop using snus. She thinks it's as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. Well, cigarettes are much more dangerous. But I guess snus is still not "healthy". But anyway, Sweden is one of the only countries where the cancer rate is falling. People think it's because Swedish guys use snus and quit smoking. All the other European countries still have higher rates of cancer. Probably because so many people smoke (like in Japan).

Friday's English Valentine

So next Tuesday is Saint Valentine's Day...

Hopefully I'll get some chocolate from my students. The wikipedia page has some interesting history. I learned that here in Japan, there's not just "girichoko" (chocolate given to male co-workers by women, out of obligation), but also "honmeichoko" (chocolate given out of true love). I hope I get some of the latter... ^_^

The wikipedia page says that Valentine's Day in Japan is a result of marketing. It's interesting that in the states, Valentine's Day is for both men and women to show their love for each other. But here in Japan, it's mostly for women to give to men. For my native English speaking readers (all three of you ;-), the Japanese confectionary companies also managed to create a second holiday - "white day", when the men can return the favor by giving sweets to women.

What I didn't know was that there is a "black day" in Korea, when men who were spurned on Valentine's Day can drown their sorrows with noodles in black sauce (see the wikipedia page).

Back when I was a child, Valentine's Day was when you gave a card to a girl you liked and revealed your love for her (and vice versa). To me, this is more romantic than chocolate, especially "girichoko". But I like chocolate, so I won't complain about "getting some".

梅まつり

もうすぐ梅ヶ丘駅の近く、羽根木公園の梅が咲いていますね。１９９８年の冬初めて日本に来ました。バレンタインデーぐらい。最初の週末彼女と一緒に羽根木公園へ梅を見に行きました。その日はまだ雪がありました。夜は下北沢に行って、初めてお好み焼きを食べました。じゃ、バレンタイン、梅まつり、渓流釣りの解禁、さくら;-)、アミガサタケ。。。楽しみにしています。^_^

Dracula (Friday's English)

As I type, I'm drinking Guinness and munching Sapporo beer crackers. Got them at the beer museum in Ebisu yesterday. I always have a beer when I'm there, since it's cheap (about 250Yen) and pleasant enough. Yesterday I had an ale.

Well anyway, today was payday, and I was thinking about getting a copy of The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It's a novel about Vlad the Impaler (I think), who was the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. Not sure if the novel will be my style... (too many novelistic adjectival flourishes?) But Bookslut liked it, so I'm guessing it's not bad. ^_^

Brain Wide Web link alert: Vlad the Impaler was Romanian (from Transylvania?) - a few years ago in Aichi, I was teaching with a Romanian girl (she was nice and kinda hot, by the way). Also, not far from my "furusato" in America, there's a Transylvania University!?!

竹の釣竿

２年前、フライフィッシング雑誌で、竹釣竿の作り方を習いました。この岩手県に住んでいる千葉さんの作り方でした。その冬、春、夏いっしょけんめい竿４本を作りました（一回目のは４ヶ月掛かりました、４回目は一週間！）。雑誌だけじゃなくて、インターネットのサイトを見て、きれいなロッドチューブの作り方もなんとなく分かって、チューブも楽しく作りました。でも最近全然作らない。後は去年の９月に一番良い竿が壊れました。:-(

１１月、１２月、ずっとリペアしたほうがいいと思ったが、何もしなかった。でも今日、リペアを始めました。今週は頑張ります！

千葉さんのサイトでは、好きな竿はこの新しい自然な（竿の竹から作った）グリップタイプ。本当にきれいじゃない？

イノシシ/トリュフ

じゃ、浅間嶺まで行けなかったが、良いハイキングできました。実はトリュフを探しに行きました。イノシシもたまにトリュフを探しているから、日本ではトリュフを見つけたい人はイノシシが掘り返した場所の近く探しています。今日はそんな場所あまりなくて、イノシシも見なかったが、イノシシを狩りしていたおじさんと話しました。:-o

And although I didn't see any wild boars, I did talk with a guy out with his hunting dogs. Asked him if he was hunting boars and he smiled and said "yep!".

今日、仕事の後八王子へショッピングに行きました。３０分ぐらいしかなかったが、私のことは目立つかなァ。。。だって、３回他の人が「彼を見て」って感じを分かりました。１回目は女子大学生と思う。２回目は５歳ぐらいの男の子。彼は「ハロー！」と言って、私はニコニコして「Hello」と言いました。彼「バイバイ」。私「ByeBye」と言いました。私はフランス人じゃなくて、ドイツ人じゃなくて、スウェーデン人じゃなくて、イタリア人じゃなくて。。。英語を話せる人だ、彼はすぐ分かった！^_- ３回目は5/6歳ぐらいの女の子。ずっと私を見ていて、お母さんに「見て！」と言いました。どうしようと思って、ニコニコしました。

なぜ女子大学生の場合何もしなくて、子供の場合ニコニコするか？私も分かりません。English below the fold...
Wondering if I stand out... because while I was shopping in Hachioji today, I noticed 3 different people pointing me out to their friends/parents. (I hope it's just because I'm a little tall!?!) First were two college-age girls, I think. Second, was a little boy who greeted me "hello" and "goodbye" within a couple of seconds. (He knew by looking at me that I was an English speaker! ;-) The third was a little girl who stared and stared and when I looked back at her, said "Look!" to her mom. I smiled at her, but she didn't smile back... :-( Now if I can just learn to smile at the college girls, I'll be in business!

ハーブプレゼント

先週キャンベルスープを買った時、このハーブのシード（タネと言う？）をプレゼントで付いていました。「Rucola」って知らなかったが、少し調べて、英語では「Salad Rocket」と言います？！？ちょっと珍しいと思います。じゃ、このハーブを育てるかなァァ。。。おいしいんだって。レストランもあるか！

I find some interesting things attached to products here in Japan, given away as presents. My favorite was a little keychain LED light in the shape of a tea leaf that came with a bottle of green tea. Last week, I got Rucola seeds with a can of Campbell's soup. Looked it up and was surprised it's called "salad rocket" in English?? Anyway, Japan is an interesting place. :-)

Jeopardy is a popular TV game show in America. Sometimes I play a simple paper version with my students. Basically, it's just a quiz, with 100 point, 200 point and 300 point questions (higher points are more difficult). Here's an example:

100pts: How do you write and pronounce ハーブティー in English?

200pts: What movie(s) had Gandalf, Frodo and Aragorn? And how do you write it in English?

300pts: What are 2 animals for which the singular and plural forms are the same in English?

まだ日本語の勉強はナマケモノです。。。でも土曜日、少～し教科書（Japanese For Busy People)を読みました。日本に住んでいるから、けっこう勉強しなくて単語少しづつ習います。でも「都合」って知らなかった。だから、どうやって覚えていると考えました。（特に、音読み使う単語が難しいと思います）あっ！ファストフードの店で＊「For here or 都合？」がいいかも。。。;-)

I'm a complete lazy ass about studying Japanese lately (for the latest 3 years...) But out of sheer boredom, I opened my J-textbook last Saturday (btw, it's not "Japanese", it's "The National Language", as it's called in schools here, positively Orwellian - imagine bold, patriotic music). I use "Japanese for Busy People" ("Japanese for Getting Busy"??) but just through osmosis, I seem to have picked up a lot of the vocabulary in the lessons I'm too lazy to study. But one word I hadn't picked up was "tsugou", which apparently means convenience, like "if it's convenient, I'll come over now". Anyway, these new words are tough to remember*, so I usually try a little "memory palace" trick to remember them. In this case, I came up with the corny scenario of a fast food joint clerk asking if the order is for here or "tsugou"? Yeah, it's corny, but I haven't forgotten it yet. ;-)

＊"humberger"?!?! Ebenezer Scrooge visits McDonald's??

* Especially the words with the old Chinese reading are tough for me to remember, since there are so many homonyms.

うるしもみじノート

12月からこの(最後の？）うるしノートを作っています。先週終わりました。Flickrではもう一枚の写真を見れます。もしこのうるしノートはきれいに成ったら、売ることができると思ったんですが、すごく時間掛かったから、１０回くらい塗らなければならないから、大変でした。左のはTさんにあげる、右のは自分で使うと思います。何を書くかなァァ。^_^

Since December I've been working on these lacquered notebooks (maybe my last). Well, last week I finally finished them. You can see another photo on Flickr.If these turn out nice, I thought this would be something I could sell to transition to the life of a craftsman... but it turned out to be a massive pain in the ass - I had to apply at least 10 layers of lacquer. The one on the left I'll give to T. The one on the right I'll use myself. But what should I write in it?!? :-o

Friday's English (100th Post)　ちょっと早い

Well, I've been writing in this weblog since last July. From time to time, I've been lazy. But (according to Blogger) this is the 100th post.

Not a lot of people read this weblog - maybe about 30 people a day. But to those of you who come and read, thanks for your support! I owe a special "thanks" to Mr. Mochizuki of HappyLife because he linked to here and quite a few people click that link and come here.

Japanese people may be interested in some of the things I like here in Japan, especially food. Many of my students and friends are surprised that I like natto. Yes! It's true!

And many people laugh (why?!?) when I say that I like manju. Especially Matsudaira Manju. :-9
