日本でヒッチハイキング

あまりしないけど、三回ぐらいしたことある。祖谷渓谷で、愛知県の田舎で、山形で。どこか読んだことある（どこで覚えてないけど）- 「Hitchhiking in Japan is safe and fun and a great way to talk to Japanese people」って書いてあった。

一 回目は本当のヒッチハイキングじゃなかった。祖谷渓谷にあるキャンプ場で描いてい るおじい さんが声をかけて、「どちらから。。。？」、「旅 行？」、すぐ英語に変わって、長い会話をした。彼は昔英語の先生だそう。「どうしてここに来たんですか？」。ぼくが「かずら橋を見に来ました。できれば、今 日もうちょっ と東の方にある、アメリカ人の茅葺民家を見たいと思います」と言った。彼は「よかったら送るよ」と言った。車に乗って送ってくれた。山の狭い道で、おじい さんが いつもカーブの近くホーンを鳴らした。思い出しているのは他の車がぶつかりそう時、おじいさんが英語で「She's a very poor driver」と言った。;-)

その後、西の方の山でキャンプするために送ってもらた。次の日徒歩で下りながら、一回目の本当の ヒッチハイキングした。（アメリカとヨーロッパではし たことない。したくない と思う。）"Thumb's up"して、ニコニコして、すぐやさしいおばさんがとまった。「どこまでですか？」って、ぼくがバススタンドとか駅までと言って、少し日本語ができる感 じ、おばさんが安心しただって。バススタンドで聞いてくれて、バスがあまり来ないから、もうちょっと駅まで送ってくれた。

愛知県の時と山 形の時、同じこと、ハイキング/キャンピングの後帰りたかった時けっこう速くやさしくて外国の人と話したそう人がとまって、送ってもらた。山形のおじさん が駅まで行く前、家でりんご と梨の味見して（He grew them）２ｋｇぐらいをもらった。そして「山形ではワインを作られている」の話あったから、近くのワイナリーに行った！

よく、「家の娘が今シアトルで留学している」とか「甥が今ニューヨークに住んでいる」と言われている。日本の田舎へ行く時、よくとてもやさしい人と話す。

一回目ヒッチハイキングした時、「ドライバーは僕のことが怖いと思うかな」ってちょっと心配した。でもそんなことなかった。（＾－＾）

Jojitown

たまに徒歩で吉祥寺に行く。ショッピングの前いつも井の頭公園で休む。その後Muji、Parco等に行く。元気だったら、"Human Video Game"をしたかったら、LonlonのFood Marketにも行く（意味はLonlonっていつも込んでいるから、歩くのはテレビゲーム見たいと思う。右！左！５０ｃｍの袋 を前腕で持っているおばーちゃんが来る！Stop!イヤーーーーーぶつかった！GameOver。。。）

公園の池でボートを借りることできるね。 楽しそう、ロマンチックと思うけど、あそこで借りたことない。二つの面白いストーリを聞いた。一つは、もしカッ プルがボートで行ったら、もうすぐ別れる。:-o　信じる？もう一つは、井の頭公園でよく援助交際のカップルを見れる。信じる？？:-o

でも、吉祥寺について、一番思い出してることは1998のワールドカップの時、USA vs. Iran のマッチを見るために、朝3時ごろ自転車で世田谷4丁目から吉祥寺のスポーツバーまで行った。USAが負けたし、雨降ったし、疲れたし。。。でもなんとなく楽しかった。

PS: 昨日この井の頭公園のギタリストを見たよ！He plays blues and he's pretty damned good.

Why all the PET bottles?

Since my ex-girlfriend was Japanese, I asked her and she told me the reason. I'll call it reason A.

Reason A: They're used for ****************.

It's a secret.

A couple of years ago, I and some co-workers were talking about it and I told them Reason A. One of the guys I worked with was a real idiot. He said, "No, they're used for putting out fires."
I guess in the picture above there are a LOT of fires! :-o

So that was reason B.

Reason B: They're used for putting out fires.

くどき上手

前書いたけど、「なぜそんなに好きかな」っと考えている人いれば。。。

一つは、ラベルの絵が好きです。
あとは、名前も好き。「くどき上手な人って楽しいよー」と言われている。面白いのは、名前は「特にナンパ上手事じゃなくて、豊臣秀吉について、説き付けるのが上手でしたから」と読みました＊。(先、"convince"を調べた時、これが出た！)
そして、美味しいよ！

他の歌麿の絵も面白いですね。たとえば、浮気。
ぼくがよく使うインターネット辞書では英語でこの意味書いてある。「fickleな」って。。。
ルアーもあるよ。 A fickle lure for a fickle fish?

＊：　ぼくは「ナンパ」の意味がいい。;-)

ワンカップ/wannabes

昨日8:30PMごろ、Buchi で飲みたかったが、満員だからやめた。コンビニで安いワンカップを買って、一人で井の頭線のホームで飲んだ。(;_;)

若い日本人の　LAwannabes　5人と一緒に電車に乗った。

仕事で見ている人はミュートしたほうがいい。
先週からこの映画は Number1 に成った。面白そう。
Trailerはここで見れる。特に、speed dating のシーン("Date-a-palooza")は「かわいそう」と思った。(ここでEnter SiteとAndy's LifeとSpeed Datingをクリックして。)

いつ日本に来るか？冗談は日本語の字幕（？？）（subtitles）で面白いかな？だって、ツイン・ピークスを 見た時「I'll go get us a couple of malts」は「ビールを買って来る」ぐらいに成っちゃた。Bonus Quiz:アメリカの"malt"とか"malted"はどんなドリンクを知っていますか？一番速く書ける人にはプレゼントをあげますよ！（＾－＾）

Update:　The Winner is.... Hackberry！milkshakeみたいもの。maltはもちろんウイスキーとビールのmaltだけど、"I want a malt"は(アメリカでは)　"I want a malted milkshake"と同じです。レシピはmilk + malted milk powder + ice cream　かな。最近あまり飲まない。50年代に人気あった。じゃ、Hackberryさん、今度会ったらプレゼントをあげます。;-)

彼女のタイプは「爽やかな男」だって

先月、女性の友達と一緒に飲みながら、何のタイプが好きですかの話だった。一人が「あたしは爽やかな男が好き」と言った。でも、「爽やかな男」って何と分からなかった。

だから、誰かかんたんな日本語で教えてもらいませんか？ぜひ、commentで教えてください！（＾－＾）

英語はダメ！;-) 後は「あまりせつめいできない」も言っちゃうダメ！;-)

YA金英

(= Yet Another 金曜日の英語)

I just put up another English post. But it is not simple English... It's long and has a lot of obscure and strange and old-fashioned English. Sorry! But it'll be good for studying, I suppose.

As the soft tennis school girls say, "Fighto! Fighto!"

PS: does "soft" refer to "tennis"? or to "school girls"?? :-o 　フフフ

Orval

Before I came to Japan, back in the days when I had a real job and I got paid a real salary, I took a few of my vacations to Belgium. One of the reasons was that I liked Belgian beer.

I rented a car and drove all over Wallonia (southern Belgium) and especially the area called the Ardennes. I visited three of the towns where famous Trappist beers are made: Rochefort, Chimay and Orval.

All three of these beers are sold in Tokyo. And all three are damned good.

The countryside near Orval is pretty. I love Belgium (even though the Belgian guy at Cisco didn't want to hire me!?%&#'"&%). The country is green and quiet with rolling hills. One can speak and hear French, which is truly a beautiful language. One eats well (French cuisine with German portions). And above all, one drinks well (over 400 kinds of beer).

Some of the best beer (IMHO) is that made by Trappist monks. Where I come from in the states, there is a Trappist monastery. But alas, they make no beer... Their delicious cheese, fruitcake and fudge notwithstanding, I am disappointed. (I miss fudge! Asked my Japanese ex-girlfriend to make some and she never got the recipe right, bless her heart!)

Orval is an interesting and peculiar brew: it has not only the usual brewers yeast, but also the somewhat wild, oft present in Burgundy, brettanomyces yeast, which imparts a tart, somewhat "funky" character that nonetheless delivers deliciousness (うまみ!?).

Orval also has an interesting and romantic story, particularly for someone who fancies a bit of angling. It seems that in the middle ages, a princess was strolling about the grounds of Orval when she, quite "like I was sooooo stupid" absentmindedly managed to drop her beautiful ring into a spring. She was resigned to lamenting its loss for the rest of time, even keeping a tear-ridden vigil at the spring side, when lo, "like, oh my gaaaawd" a friendly trout breached and offered the lovely princess her ring. Or... something like that...

Ever since, Orval has been associated with the symbol of a trout with a golden ring in its mouth. The necklace you see above has this very symbol, as does the reverse of the Orval glass goblet.

You can, of course, drink the brew at a nearby inn. And Orval has some magnificent ruins in addition to the neo-romanesque new abbey.

The reason I got interested in Orval and Belgian beer was that I was a homebrewer. You can buy homebrewing equipment and ingredients at Tokyu Hands (although I hear that it's illegal - funny how that works in Japan).

缶コーヒー

缶コーヒーは日本の”文化”の一つ面白い物ですね。ぜんぜんおいしくないと思うけど、たまになんとなく好きです。とても便利で、ドライブの時自動販売機で買うの好きです。

最近よく飲むのはGeorgia Espresso Caffè。

でも質問あります：　このポストを読んだら、教えてください。その缶のラベルを見る時、上に書いてあるイタリア語か、下にあるカタカナの「エスプレッソカフェ」か、どっちを最初読みますか？

あ とは、面白いストーリあるよ。前の”仕事”では、Coca-Colaを飲むのはダメだけど、缶コーヒーは飲んでいいだって。生徒達 に「悪いマナーとか悪いモラール」を見せないようにだって。変 だよね。でもCoca-Colaと缶コーヒーはだいたい同じ物じゃん。両方カフェインがある。両方茶色だね。両方甘いよ。両方冷たく、缶で飲むね。一つの 違いところはCoca-Colaは泡がある。泡はダメだよー！

あれは愛知県の時。。。

お歯黒

なんとなくお歯黒が好きです。珍しいよね。日本の文化の中でいろんなuniqueな事がある。私はきもの、いけばな、侍、茶道よりこの珍しい文化が好きです。茅葺民家、うるし、等。

お歯黒は珍しいよね。最近だれもしないかも。でもなんとなく面白くて、きれい？、かわいい？、セクシーだと思う。なぜ私もよく分からない。

昭和48年まで、東北で使ったかな。

still more 金曜日の英語

Well... it's Friday again. Nothing much to say, really.

I finally went back to that udon place in nishi-shinjuku (sinjyuku in nippon-shiki romaji - note the "sin"). What was the name? Oh yeah, 東京麺通団.

It was OK, I guess. My Japanese friends weren't able to tell me why the egg udon was supposed to be "sexy". I guess it will remain a mystery.

The orange-haired, plucked eyebrow guy behind the counter was kind of rude to me. Never ceases to amaze me when Japanese people say rude shit to me, assuming I can't understand Japanese and don't know what they're saying. Especially, when it's a guy with orange hair and plucked eyebrows and when I'm minding my own business.

どっちが勝つ？

変な日本語だけど。。。9月11日の総選挙で、自民党か民主党か、どっちが勝つと思うか？ぜひ、commentで書いてください。

占領が終わったから今までずっと自民党だったね。（細川さんが首相だった時だけ自民党じゃなかったか）。

茅葺民家が好き

その前、四国の祖谷渓谷が好きと書いたね。みんな「えぇぇ？どうして？」と思ったかもしれない。

この本を読んだから。(英語のバージョン を読んちゃった;-)

英語を話す人が日本に来る時Lonely　Planet　Japanのガイドブックをよく使う。そのガイドブックで、Alex　Kerrが祖谷にあった茅葺民家を買って、祖谷に引っ越したって書いてある。祖谷渓谷は本当に　”Lost　Japan”　ですから、見に行ったほうがいいって感じ。（”って感じ”は女性の日本語だよね。。。：－O）

日本語で書いたよ。そして、翻訳者で英語のバージョンを書いてもらった。面白いよね。「美しき日本の残像」が１９９４年に新潮学芸賞を受賞した。茅葺民家について、「黒光り」といろいろを書いたから、見に行きたいなァと思った。

"Lost Japan"を読んだから、私が（と他の"Lonely Planet Japan"を読んだ人）祖谷に行った。

茅葺民家は川崎市にもあるよ。日本のいろんな所からの民家を見れる。

伝統的な家がけっこう好きですよ。（あまり伝統的じゃないけど、自然にやさしい家も好き。）

アメリカ人はみんな知っているかもしれない：「The Magnificent Seven」　でも日本人は知っているかな？

逆はどうかな。アメリカ人のなかで、クラシック映画のファンは「七人の侍」を知っているかもしれないけど、ほとんどのは知らないかな。

女子高生が。となりの女子高校で朝から夜６時まで、ソフトテニスの部活時間。

カワイイだけど。。。うルルルルさい！

あとは、なぜ「ファイト」とどんどん言っている？「Fight？」喧嘩？？　ちょっとこわいじゃん。　;-)

じゃ、しょうがないかも。ごめんね、今日は気分わるい。 ;-)

Poor Man's Moleskine (モールスキン)

その前,ITの人の中で一つのトレンディーな物について書いたね。The　Hipster　PDA。

もう一つのとトレンディーな物はこのかっこいいなMoleskineと言うノートです。こちらは自由が丘のカスタムモールスキンです。

僕もモールスキンが好きだけど、無印良品の教徒ですから、モールスキンを買ったら浮気な感じでしょ。だから、「貧乏な人のモールスキン」(!?)のプロジェクトを企てる。（The Poor Man's Moleskine Project. よく英語では"Poor Man's なんとかなんとか"と言われている。）

step by step:

１）　無印良品の文庫本ノートを買って
２）　カバーの上にうるしを塗る　（東急ハンズで売っている）
３）　待っていて
４）　終わり！

漆はめずらしい趣味ですね。どして、僕は興味があるか？はずかしい。。。前の元彼女が石川県の輪島で漆を勉強したから、紹介をしてもらった。でも気をつけて！漆にも元彼女にも。;-)
